Even by her standards, Ronda Rousey has been receiving a lot of media coverage lately, in the build up to her Strikeforce fight on March 3rd against Meisha Tate, and without a doubt, it is the most highly anticipated women’s MMA match since the Gina Carano vs Chris Cyborg fight in August of 2009. In her first interview with TapouT Radio since Chris Cyborg tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, Ronda voiced her views on the subject, and how she saw it impacting on women’s MMA.
“Chris Cyborg was abusing for so long, it changed the bone structure of her face. Just because everyone else is doing it, I mean, that’s a reason not to. It’s one of the reasons why I’ve always fought clean and it never bothered me, even if I knew. Even in the Olympics I knew a lot of the other girls were doping and it is just so much more satisfying to win without it, because A) You know you’re that much better than everybody else and B) the people who take steroids, it ultimately comes from insecurity. It comes from them thinking that they’re not good enough without it. You know what? I’m crazy enough to think that I could win a fight on one leg in a ring of fire. I don’t need any drugs and when I see that people feel a need to do that, it’s a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of mental weakness and that they can’t find their own confidence without feeling like they need to cheat.
I don’t think this has thrown a monkey wrench into the credibility of women’s MMA. I think it threw a monkey wrench into the credibility of Chris Cyborg, and I think you have to rethink all of her wins before, over Gina Carano, Marloes Coenen, and all these girls. You know, it’s not like she beat them on technique, and if she wasn’t doping, she wouldn’t have won any of those fights. I think it adds to the credibility of those other girls who actually fought with technique and integrity. They weren’t being crushed by this chick. She was using, and you know what, if they were using too, it would have been a different ball game. I think women’s MMA is better in general with her gone, because I can’t think of any little girl who would watch her an be like “Mommy I want to be that when I grow up.” If I was a little girl, and I saw that, I’d be like, ‘Eww is that what you have to be like to be a good fighter? I don’t know if I want to be a fighter ‘
I think with her gone, yeah she was fun to watch, in a freak show kind of way, but I don’t think she was doing any favors in attracting new women that wanted to be fighters.”

you actually couldn’t be more wrong. cyborg has not looked like that since she was 17 you idiot. she actually looked like a woman at one point. that being said – she deserves her suspension, and now THAT being said.. i don’t agree with the current rules for enhancement “medication” i believe they should be allowed to an extent. i do believe she only took them to help her with her weight cut and that is why i believe they should be allowed to a certain extent.
Dylan you must not be familiar with the female lymphatic system, but it doesn’t produce enough of the necessary hormones for a woman to get that masculine, and Cyborgs failed drug test backs that fact up. Besides, like all drugs, steroids enter and leave your system at different rates, so doping athletes often pass drug tests by being clean right before weigh ins and testing. I’ll bet cyborg dopes before all of her fights by timing her roid cycles between testing, so are you really calling out roussey for thinking that too? She’s not a politician man, so don’t complain about her words. She’s a classy and clean Olympian that straight throws chicks around by her own merits, with skills that she earned honestly. Plus dude…. she’s like super hot.

He went from a slim outfielder to a Neanderthal hulking home run slugger courtesy of steroids and, yes, it changed his entire being – facial bone structure included. Rousey is dead on. Dylan, Cris Cyborg has looked like she currently does only for a few years. Early on in her first few fights, she looked like a normal, healthy, fit young woman. There’s only so much muscle a frame can take naturally. It’s been obvious for a while. Also, it’s strange to suggest that Ronda hasn’t done her research, she’s one of the more observant modern mma practitioners we’ve seen.
Ronda makes a point with all her statments. You take drugs once and it becomes all the time. Gina hit cyborg and it had no affect and its not cause she’s weak, its dope. Deal with it DOPE
Ronda is absolutely right, whether some people want to believe it or not. And the fact that she continues to use these pre-packaged excuses about her steroid use is extremely offensive to the fans. Funny how people try to defend the most obvious case of steroid use in all of MMA, even AFTER she’s failed a drug test, haha.

If you look at cyborgs first fight you’ll notice how different she looks now. She lost by double kneebar to Erica Paes in 1:46 seconds. She looked like any woman fighter and her face was so different I had a hard time figuring out who she was when I first saw the video. We know she used after that fight because of the changes in her features and her size. Ronda is not an asshole for saying what everyone has been thinking since they first saw cyborg fight. Cyborg is the asshole fight beating up everyone in the division while cheating.
Cyrborg shows sign of the use of enhancement drugs not only on her face but also on her voice, on her skin, bone structure, muscle density and an extreme low Body fat percentage. And there must be other side effects we can not see because they are covered. As everybody knows enhancement drugs are nothing but a Male Hormone called Testosterone so the question is: what does a Woman have to do with a Man’s Hormone?????

Maybe cyborg starting her cycle when she was 16 but regardless she tested positive and that gives just about anyone the right to criticize her. It’s a let down to fans and now that it has happen it kills that division. Her new nickname is cy-roid and when you get caught cheating you get no quarter.

NO, so all other fights, that she made test and it stated that she was clear, then she was clear. period. In the world of sports, America is knew as one of the most advanced country in the doping. It would be easier to say that, despite the fact that you never got caught you are doped (BTW your voice is changing and your body as well. Maybe you don’t go over the thresholds but if you get caught in a AD test, it won’t be a surprise either).

I concur with the previous statement in the fact that she has no right criticizing Cris Cyborg’s looks….Last I checked MMA isn’t about being a pretty face, yes I know that it definitely helps to promote female fighters, but our skills are more important…Gina Carano wasn’t the first gorgeous female fighter… there are many pretty faces.. the thing that made Gina so popular was that she was sexy and incredibly talented. Having fought Ronda myself, I am not going to deny her talent… I have the longest time in the ring with her.. which wasnt long, but I believe she is very beatable, the trick is to train specifically for her by training with an olympic level judo coach who knows her specific skills well and can train a defense/offense plan that reduces her ability to utilize her main skill.

There really should be an age requirement to post comments. Or perhaps an intelligence requirement. Rosuey may be in for the fight of her life with Tate, but she is absolutely correct about PED use. As for her specific comment about looking like Cyborg, there are a LOT of people that thought she shoudl be GENDER checked, let alone PED checked, so I can see her point.
It sucks when someone sacrifices time away from their families to train and then they lose out on a bigger pay day because someone cheats them out of it. And how much money was she fined? Almost NOTHING! Not by comparison to all the money she essensially stole from those fighters she has dirty wins over.

The dietary supplement defense is about as weak as Alberto Contador’s tainted meat defense. Stanozolol is also known as winstrol which was one of the main steroids used by the East Germans and Czechs in their widespread doping campaign in the 70s and 80s. It is basically synthetic testosterone. When you add that bit of history to the mix, it seems fairly clear that she was doping.
I think that some of Ronda’s comments were over the top but Cyborg showed no class in tweeting a photo of Gina Carrano in response.
I will say that WMMA is not a beauty contest so how a woman looks in the cage has nothing to do with it.

She comes from a time (and her husband as well) where if you wanted to be MMA fighter, you had to take steroids. This fight against roids is something new (as you are as well) in the MMA world. In the near past, if you weren’t taking steroids, you weren’t doing it right.
Howard Brammer, not true. i was in her first fight, Show Fight 2, and what’s happened was: in the takedown attempt the other girl hit’ed her knee, and it was a serious enjury. Cyborg asked for revenge and the girl never accepted.
Again: it wasn’t her first anti-doping test. If you assume that she escaped from the others (it means she was doped but she could hide it) then we can say the same from everyone, including Ronda.
BTW: it’s a fucking BS this show that Ronda is doing. MMA was always about Doping: Everybody forgot that all americans that started in the UFC (Kerr, Coleman, Randleman) were ALL dopped?
